Prof Richard Luxton, Chair Medilink SW

Director, Institute of Bio-Sensing Technology

Following the launch of the Institute of Bio-Sensing Technology (IBST) Richard launched the successful International Conference for Bio-sensing Technology in 2009, in conjunction with Elsevier, which will have its seventh meeting in 2022. Following the success of the conference, Richard worked with Elsevier to launch a new open access journal in 2014 called Sensor and Biosensor Research for which he is Editor-in-Chief.

In 2011 he was successful in launching the South West Biomedical Innovation Network which supports the commercialisation of innovation in small and medium enterprises in the South West of England. In 2012, he launched a European funded Business Technology Centre to develop cell monitoring technology and supporting companies develop their products by enabling access to cutting edge technologies. Also in 2012 he was responsible for launching Medilink South West, a trade organisation for the biomedical sector in the South West of England and is currently the company Chairman. In Sept 2014 he completed his term as Chair of the Sensors in Water Interest Group, a trade body for the water industry, in which he is still an active Board member. He is currently working to develop a new centre for the life sciences where companies can assess academic expertise to develop new products, in particular detection and monitoring technologies for health.

Prof Rory Shaw, Medical Director of Healthcare UK

Professor Shaw has been a medical director in the NHS for over 15 years, latterly at North West London Hospitals Trust, and previously at Royal Berkshire Foundation Trust and Hammersmith Hospitals Trust. He has also held national roles as non-executive of the NHS Litigation Authority and previously as the first Chairman of the National Patient Safety Agency. He is a consultant respiratory physician.

Chris Born was appointed Interim Managing Director of Healthcare UK in February 2016. Chris is a former NHS CEO who has worked as a senior consultant specialist with Healthcare UK at UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) for the last four years. He works with National Health Service (NHS) and commercial health and care organisations in the UK to make an integrated offer to investors, governments and health services in the target markets of China, India, Brazil, the Middle East and other countries. He is very well versed in all aspects of healthcare and most recently has been working on elderly care in China and a Smart City healthcare offer to India with the development of a detailed UK offers. In 2011, Chris was Managing Director of NHS Global for the UK Department of Health, promoting the value of the NHS overseas. NHS Global has now been integrated with Healthcare UK. Chris is an experienced NHS chief executive who worked for the NHS for nearly 25 years and the care industry for the previous 15 years.

This included leading two Primary Care Trusts, responsible for commissioning local health services worth over £300m for 210,000 patients. He led a major £0.5 billion programme to redevelop health services in Bristol and ran an NHS Trust providing mental health services
