Continued success for innovators at MySunrise

Back in September 2022, colleagues and stakeholders from across the South West gathered together for an exciting MySunrise Day event.

Organised by the team at MySunrise, and held at the South West AHSN’s offices at Vantage Point, Exeter, MySunrise Day proved to be a fantastic opportunity for the team to celebrate successes and highlight the release of the new updated version of the MySunrise Cancer Companion app.

MySunrise is a free mobile app providing information and support to cancer patients, and their families, at their NHS hospital.

The app offers help with symptom support, access to video consults, rapid access to oncology teams, treatments, support groups and more, all designed with a focus on helping to improve treatment outcomes for cancer patients.

The South West AHSN is delighted to continue to work with the team at MySunrise, as part of our core focus on supporting our partners to identify and spread innovative practices which transform lives in the South West through health and care.

Rosie Graham, Programme Manager for Discovery at the South West AHSN, commented:

We are so pleased to witness MySunrise continue to flourish across the South West and beyond. The impact that the team have been able to achieve, via the introduction of their cancer app, has been clear for all to see and it is fantastic that this will now go on to benefit patients and families across new parts of the UK too.”

Dr George Brighton, GP and Director of MySunrise, also said:

After a busy summer we are thrilled to be able to share the new version of MySunrise to the region. We’ve spent the last 2 years listening and learning from cancer patients and oncology teams in the Peninsula and this has been key to designing the new features including our treatment pathway and new digital tools such as the virtual pre-assessment. We look forward to hearing feedback and want to thank the South West AHSN for their continued support which has been essential to our progress so far.”

Originally developed by the oncology team at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, before being rolled out across all five cancer centres in the South West in 2020, MySunrise is currently being offered free at the start of treatment to all patients undergoing cancer treatment in the South West Peninsula.

Since inviting the team to attend our Spread Academy event in October 2021, the South West AHSN has been supporting the MySunrise team to create design improvements, evidence values, increase patient engagement, and make the content more accessible across its communities.

Following on from the event, we are delighted to share a number of exciting updates from the MySunrise team, which include the launch of a new version of their mobile app, contributions to the UK Oncology Nursing Society Conference and expansion of their services into new sites across the UK:

  • Firstly, a new version of the MySunrise Cancer app is now available to download from app stores and includes a whole host of new content, digital tools and features all aimed to support cancer patients.

  • Secondly, the team are thrilled to announce that they have had a series of three abstracts accepted at the 2022 UK Oncology Nursing Society’s Conference, where the theme this year will be Cancer Care in the Digital Age. The abstracts will feature as posters at the conference, to be held in November. They also have a stand at the conference where they will be showcasing the new features and talking to cancer teams from around the UK.

  • And, finally, following on from their successes here in the South West, the team are excited to announce that they are now starting to expand their work across new sites, including the West Midlands Cancer Alliance – a fantastic move which will see their app starting to have an even wider impact across new parts of the UK.
