Medilink UK Brexit Preparation Briefing in Bristol
30/10/2019
Medilink UK, a membership organisation representing over 1350 medical technology and life-science businesses, organised this free event to help businesses prepare for Brexit with Medilink South West. The event took place on Tuesday 29th October at the University Enterprise Zone, University of West England.
Thank you to everyone who made it on Tuesday. It was an engaging day of talks with some important conversations amongst SME's and organisations working in the Life Sciences here in the South West and beyond.
Regulatory Environment was covered by Keith Heaton of @i2rmedical. Keith addressed the changes to CE Marking and FDA Clearance in the post-Brexit UK Life Science industry, by exploring the key factors involved in the commercialisation of a new medical device @MedilinkUK
Potential effects on the Supply Chain in the post-Brexit UK health tech industry were outlined by Peter Brown from @GEFCO_Group with some interesting secondary input from colleague Oliver Salley, at our @medilinkuk Brexit Preparation Briefing.
@MedilinkTom covered New International Opportunities at our Brexit Preparation Briefing in Bristol, providing a different perspective and presenting some potential opportunities amidst all of the uncertainty.
Will Doherty from @Albright_IP delivered a thorough exploration of potential IP Issues for companies, in the event of a deal or no-deal Brexit.
The number of health and life science businesses in the South West region has increased by 25 per cent in the last three years, making the sector an important regional player. The government maintains that the UK will leave the European Union on 31 October 2019, with or without a deal in place. To ensure life science businesses are prepared for this eventuality, Medilink will provide expert guidance and detailed information on behalf of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). The event, along with five other conferences in Leeds, London, Birmingham, Cardiff and Motherwell, was aimed at helping businesses to understand the risks and opportunities that Brexit presents. Attendees heard from experts on regulatory considerations, trading implications, recruitment, legal, intellectual property and export opportunities. Richard Luxton, Chair of the Board of Directors at Medilink South West, said: “Conversations I have with businesses in our sector are confirming that many life science and medical technology businesses are not prepared for Brexit and could really benefit from expert guidance and detailed information about both the risks and opportunities.”
